Your information: applications collect personal information, including a copy of your state-issued ID. Read how we protect it: Privacy & Data Security.
All internship participants must be 18 years of age or older and their own legal guardian. Applicants 18 and older apply directly using the form below.
If you are an adult student, your school may also refer you: ask your school's internship or work-based learning coordinator about our school partnership packet (PDF). In a school-referred placement, your school transmits your application materials, certifies that you meet the program's eligibility requirements, and confirms its insurance coverage as the packet describes. We do not accept participants under 18 in any channel.
Takes about five minutes. You'll upload your résumé right in the form (Google sign-in required for uploads).
The Opportunity
Run the Room is a weekly podcast about how business actually works, built from the very beginning — the idea, the customer, the money, the books, hiring, operations — with the leaders who build and run businesses as guests.
We offer a small number of unpaid, educational internships for business, communications, and management students who want real media-and-business experience: researching leaders, organizations, and how businesses actually operate, and supporting partnership outreach — with everything you produce reviewed and vetted by the producer before it is used anywhere.
Term: 12–14 weeks, aligned to your semester · 5–10 flexible hours per week, school-first
Location: Remote (United States)
Compensation: Unpaid — educational internship, designed to pair with academic credit
Reports to: Charles Mayfield, Executive Producer
What You'll Do
- Guest research: build dossiers on business and community leaders — their organizations, how those organizations are built and run, and the public record behind both.
- Business research: gather sourced material on how businesses across industries are structured, financed, staffed, and operated — the show's subject matter, researched from primary and public sources.
- Partnership outreach support: draft outreach to prospective guests and partners for the producer's review — nothing goes out under your name or unreviewed.
- Production support: episode preparation notes, source lists, and follow-up tracking.
What You'll Learn
- How to research an organization and its leadership from primary and public sources — and verify what you find.
- How professional outreach is written, reviewed, and conducted.
- How a weekly show is planned, produced, and quality-checked end to end.
- How businesses across industries actually work — the subject of the show, learned from the inside.
Standards
- Everything you submit includes its sources. Unverifiable material is not used.
- You identify yourself honestly as an intern with Run the Room in any contact the producer assigns.
- Recording anyone requires consent, arranged through the producer — always.
- Assignment material is the show's until the producer releases it; interns do not publish it elsewhere.
This is an educational internship, not a job, and it does not promise employment. Where your school offers credit, we complete the learning agreement, supervision, and evaluation paperwork your program requires — tell us your school's process when you apply.
Adult Students — Placements Through Your School
If you are 18 or older and enrolled at a school or college, this internship can be built as a work-based learning placement or an internship for credit under your school's own program. The way it works: your school's coordinator approves a learning plan with us before you start; a certified educator at your school awards any credit; we co-design the plan with your coordinator, supervise and mentor the work, verify your hours, provide midpoint and final assessment input, and join your final presentation. You apply and sign for yourself — every participant must be 18 years of age or older and their own legal guardian.
School-referred interns do the same research and production-support work described above — guest dossiers, business research, production prep — with everything vetted by the producer before use. Ask your school's internship or work-based learning coordinator to request our school partnership packet.
How to Apply
Email runtheroom@outlook.com with:
- Your name, school, and program or major
- A short paragraph about one business decision — any business, any size — that changed an outcome, for better or worse, and what made the difference
- Your availability for the term, and whether you are seeking academic credit (and your school's contact for it)
- One writing sample of any kind — class work is fine
Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. Selected applicants get a short call with the producer's office before any decision.
